Sometimes people think that having a family business is a great thing.
They imagine that you are financially secure, constantly employed, and able to set your own schedule as much as needed.
People tend to believe that working with your family means working with your friends. It is not the same at all. When you come from a difficult family, it is especially challenging to have a career in the same building as they do. Everyone has to share important business tasks and there is a lot of animosity over perceived workloads. On top of all of that, you never get to escape the stress of your business. I can tell you this first-hand having worked in the family heating, cooling, and air quality control repair business for the past 15 years. I first started in the HVAC industry as an intern at the heating and cooling dealership. Eventually, I went on to obtain my certification in indoor air handling devices, installation, and repair services. That’s when I started working at the heating and cooling repair shop as a full-fledged HVAC technician. At first, things were great… Until I would make a simple mistake with an air conditioning repair appointment or furnace diagnostics service. Suddenly, it felt like all hell broke loose at the heating and cooling repair business and at home. You see, I could never escape from the criticism at my HVAC technician job because I still had to interact with my brothers, uncles, and Dad at home. It’s one thing to accept criticism at the heating and cooling dealership… It’s another when the text messages, phone calls, and personal attacks never cease.
