A lot of times, people have to make hard decisions about what they can buy and what can wait until some other time.
I have always been in that situation. I have never had much extra money at the end of each month, and I often had to turn to credit cards to get through life. I have not used credit to buy anything since I purchased my used car about six years ago, though. I now have a salary and a side hustle that allow me to live within my means most of the time. In fact, I am paying off the debt now. Now that I have a decent amount of income, I also don’t have to put off things I used to have to do without. For example, tires on the car. In the past, I would have to wait until I had a blowout before I could get new tires. Also, when the a/c broke in the car, I lived without it. I had no a/c in my car for five years, and living without the air conditioning was miserable, let me tell you. Also, doing preventive maintenance was rare back in those days. When the HVAC in the house went out, we would call in the heating and cooling repair company, and they would always recommend we purchase a heating and cooling annual service contract, but we never had the money. Now, because I know that HVAC maintenance is wise, I have that yearly HVAC tune-up agreement. I have a little extra money and I choose to spend a little of it to make sure that the heating and cooling is well maintained. It is less likely to malfunction this way, and those 100 degree days can be combated with my smoothly running a/c. If the a/c should happen to break down one day, the HVAC agreement also allows me to have first pick when it comes to service calls.
