You never know what is going to be transformative in the early lives of animals.
I think we all know a human being who has a strange preoccupation with something from their childhood.
Some of us are obsessed with stuffed animals, soft blankets, or a particular story book. Others have never overcome their fear of the dark, pools of water, or being mocked by their siblings. Obviously, humans are deeply impacted by the events that happened during development… But what about our pets? Based on the fact that my cat is obsessed with air vents, I think that their early experiences matter too. When my cat was young she found a way to sneak into the air vent one day. For the next several days she enjoyed running through the air ductwork and terrorizing everybody in the house from her central heating and cooling maze. Ever since then, it’s been difficult to keep my cat away from the air ducts. She is obsessed with air vents and constantly stares at them whether we’re running the air conditioning unit or the forced air furnace. Obviously, this comes with some challenges… Especially when we call out the central heating, cooling, and air quality control technician for a routine diagnostic appointment. He always likes to look in our air ducts to make sure that we don’t have any indoor air contaminants blocking the air passageway and preventing energy efficient circulation throughout the house. Unfortunately, every time he touches an air vent my cat is right at his side. More specifically, she is climbing up his shoulders to try to gain access to the air duct. At least if she gets stuck we have a professional HVAC worker on stand by.
