Back when I was growing up in the South, there was hardly anyone who had central a/c appliances in their dwellings.
It honestly was one of those things where you knew which people in the area had central air conditioning & which ones didn’t.
Clearly, most of the people who had a central air conditioning appliance were more wealthy than the rest! We weren’t really poor, but the bunch of us weren’t rich either. We didn’t have central a/c at all, & the only people that the group of us knew who did were the owners of the general store in town. Of course, the group of us never hung out at their dwelling but a few times they invited us over for dinner. I can recall the first time the group of us made the choice to go there on a sizzling Summer evening & the group of us decided to go inside the dwelling. Then the chilly air hit me square in the face & it was the best feeling I had ever experienced! I remember kneeling there in the air conditioning & wishing that I would never have to leave & go back out into the heat of the Summer day. When I grew up & finally moved out, I purchased a window a/c appliance & took it with me wherever I went. I knew that from that point moving on, I was never going to be thrilled living somewhere separate from air conditioning again. Of course, nowadays, there are way more people who have central a/c appliances. Almost every company & church building has an air conditioning appliance, along with most cars. I’m delighted that there’s central a/c appliances almost everywhere that I go now.
