I know a lot of people who think that work is a social time.
So many of my co-workers have reported into the job each day acting as if they were being paid to walk around and shoot the shit with her co-workers. Honestly, I cannot understand this way of thinking whatsoever. As someone who wants to efficiently get my work done and get on with my day, it is baffling why people would try to combine their social lives with their daily work tasks. This is why I appreciate working the third shift as often as possible. When I go into the office in the middle of the night I am the only person on staff. This means I have the place entirely to myself. I don’t have to worry about people uselessly chit-chatting. I also don’t have to worry about negotiating over the thermostat controls. I realized a long time ago that it’s extremely comfortable to be the one in charge of the heating and cooling equipment in the office. For once, I don’t have someone freezing me with overabundant air conditioning. I really enjoy having full dictatorship over the indoor air temperature and air quality for those 8 hours that I’m alone at night. That is, unless the heating and cooling system is broken when I arrive. Last week I showed up for my job and found that the thermostat was completely turned off. The heating and cooling equipment had failed at some point in the day and nobody bothered to arrange an HVAC repair appointment before I showed up for my shift. Then, I got to sit in the office freezing my butt off and trying to find emergency HVAC repair services in the middle of the night. My heating and cooling repair cost was higher than it needed to be and I got nothing done for my entire shift.
